If youāre an American with Internet access, youāve probably done it. You get a headache, a sniffle or a mystery bruise, and instead of seeing your doctor, you consult āDr. Google.ā
According to some studies, more than 80 percent of Americans have used the Internet to āself-diagnoseā health issues. Āé¶¹ĪŽĀė°ę public health communication new partnership with an eHealth startup aims to help people get quality information and find out what they do with it once they have it.
āSometimes the answers people get from websites are like newspaper horoscopes,ā Ramirez said. āYou canāt really say that thereās anything wrong with the answer, but itās so generic as to be useless for any individual situation. So you end up with people convinced they have some rare cancer, and that creates undue anxiety.
āAnother problem with simply āGooglingā symptoms is that search engines refer people to sites of varying quality, and there is a lot of junk information out there.ā
Thatās where .com, an āartificial-intelligence health assistant,ā comes in. The tool synthesizes 22,000 pieces of clinical literature, data and studies that have been encoded in its algorithm, along with more than 35,000 questions medical professionals would ask a patient in a live setting, to guide users through a virtual medical interview.
Users get three possible diagnoses, along with recommendations for levels of care appropriate for each.
While he was a Harvard Medical School student, Dr. Andrew Le saw many patients who sought emergency room care when they didnāt need it or arrived too late to get critical help because they tried to self-triage by using information from the Internet.
His own fatherās illness and inability to decipher online information inspired Le to take a sabbatical in his final year of school to develop the artificial-intelligence-based platform called BuoyHealth.com, launched in 2017.
Le earned his M.D. and has since devoted his time and resources to making Buoy as robust as it can be, and while the platform ā with more than 100,000 users a day ā has demonstrated successes, Le recently invested in Ramirezās lab with a $130,000 grant to study how effective the service is.
āWeāre simply trying to help people make safer, more efficient health-care decisions,ā he said.

Ramirez said her lab will study whether a medically-vetted, Web-based symptom checker will help people, and if so, how.
Besides saving people from unnecessary emergency room trips or waiting too long to seek help, there are other benefits to such a service.
āUsing a platform like Buoy can help people prepare for encounters with medical professionals,ā she said. āLots of questions people face in the doctorās office can feel embarrassing, and this gives them a practice run at how they will answer. Preparing online can alleviate a lot of potential anxiety.ā
Buoyās site is free for individuals, and companies or agencies can purchase customizable versions to help employees improve their healthcare.
Ramirez is with Āé¶¹ĪŽĀė°ęās and is affiliated with the campusās . Her research examines how communication affects health, and she has received research funding from the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
āIām excited about this project,ā Ramirez said. āThere are a lot of companies trying to figure out how to use technology to improve health, but sometimes in the rush to use the sexiest new technologies, the ultimate goal gets lost. Buoy is unique in that it is leveraging powerful machine learning techniques to analyze medical ābig dataā in the service of better health. We just have to see how people respond.ā
